Macroeconomic aggregates (National Accounts INE)

The production of the transport and storage sector reached 149,788 million euros in 2022, with an added value of 51,624 million euros.

Companies and their activity

According to the INE's Central Business Directory, 210,017 companies were registered in the transport and storage sector in 2022, of which 165,775 operated in the road and pipeline transport branch.

Foreign trade and investment

Foreign investment

Spanish companies in the transport and storage sector invested 1.368 million euros abroad in 2022. Furthermore, 1.240 million euros were invested from abroad in Spanish companies in the sector.

Foreign trade

The value of imports in 2022 reached 459,202 million euros, the majority of which arrived by sea and road (44 and 46 % respectively). Exports reached 387,599 million euros, the majority of which came by sea and road (32 and 55% respectively).

In tonnes, 261 million tonnes were imported, 75% by sea and 21% by road; and 182 million tonnes were exported, 55% by sea and 41% by road.

Employment

In 2022 1,099,400 people were employed in the transport and storage sector, according to the Labour Force Survey. The number of Social Security affiliates in the transport and storage sector reached 1,008,496 workers.

Business operation and financing

Operating results

In 2021, companies in the transport and storage sector achieved a turnover of 113,823.2 million euros, with an output value of 84,118 million euros, according to Structural Business Statistics: Services Sector.
