Portal of the Observatory of Transport and Logistics in Spain

Transport and mobility are a fundamental aspect of today's society. In order to improve and guarantee its proper functioning, it is essential to have a global vision and to have reliable, updated, transparent and accessible information on transport and logistics activity in Spain.

OTLE areas

Mobility

OTLE analyses the mobility of passengers and freight from a global perspective, considering all modes of transport (road, rail, air and sea) and areas (national and international).

  • Intercity passenger transport

393,910 million passenger-kilometres in 2021, of which almost 90 % are road journeys.

  • International passenger transport

More than 150 million annual passengers in 2020. Road and air travel are in the top positions.

  • Freight

2,183 million tonnes in 2021. More than 73 % are of national origin and destination. In domestic transport almost 95.8 % is by road and in international transport 78.3 % is by sea.

Socioeconomics

imagen Socioeconomics

Given the importance of socioeconomic aspects in any activity, especially in transport and logistics, we include information on macroeconomic aggregates, companies, employment, investment, prices and costs, etc.

  • Transport and storage sector

Production of 117,580 million euros, value added of 43,163 million euros, 210,502 companies and 901,800 jobs in 2021.

  • Foreign investment

In 2021, net investment in transport and storage activities by Spanish companies amounted to 308,6 million euros, much lower than the 701,4 million euros invested in Spain from abroad.

  • Imports in transport

276,925 million and around 227 million tonnes in 2020.

  • Exports in transport

263,628 million euros and almost 175 million tonnes in 2020.

Infrastructure and capital

In this section we offer global statistical information on transport infrastructures in Spain, data on rolling stock, and investments in technology and innovation.

  • Infrastructure

165.443 kilometres of roads in 2019, a rail network of 15,632 kilometres in 2021, 46 airports (and 2 heliports) in the Aena network and 28 port authorities.

  • Road vehicle fleet

In 2021, the national vehicle fleet consisted of 35,178,808 vehicles.

  • Internal R&D expenditure

Companies in the transport and storage sector invested 47.6 million euros in R&D in 2021.

Safety

imagen Safety

Moving people or goods as efficiently and safely as possible is one of the biggest challenges facing the transport sector today. For this reason we have safety and accident information on all modes of transport.

  • Accident rate

    • Road transport: 89,862 accidents in 2021.
    • Railway: 165 accidents in 2021.
    • Air transport: 42 accidents in commercial air transport, general aviation and other flight operations in 2021.
    • Sea transport: 7,833 emergencies in 2021.

  • Fatalities

    • Road transport: more than 1,533 fatalities in 2021.
    • Railway: 15 fatalities in 2021.
    • Commercial air transport: 0 in 2021.
    • Sea transport: 212 fatalities in 2021.

Sustainability

We analysed three specific aspects of environmental sustainability in transport: the air pollution generated by each mode of transport, the energy consumption of each mode of transport and the amount of the population exposed to noise pollution.

  • Emissions

73 million tonnes of CO2 were emitted in 2020 by domestic traffic. Of these, 94 % were from road transport.

  • Energy consumption

Domestic traffic consumed 1,058,797 terajoules in 2020, with road transport being the largest contributor with almost 94 % of consumption.

Metropolitan transport

imagen Metropolitan transport

As a consequence of the growing importance of cities, metropolitan mobility is becoming more and more important. We analysed metropolitan transport by collective means of transport (metro, tram and bus) based on the information gathered by the Metropolitan Mobility Observatory.

  • Collective public transport

9,876 million passenger-kilometres were added by the major metropolitan areas in 2020, with bus being the most used mode (5,906  million passenger-km) compared to rail with 3,970.

  • Línes

1,286  urban bus lines in the main metropolitan areas and 832 kilometres of railways (metro, light rail and tramway) in 2020..

  • Revenue

1,988 million euros in 2020 in tariff revenues.

Logistics
